Its no secret that I have come to look on Tom as not only a friend but a mentor,  I have drawn on Tom's help and knowledge of all things equestrian not just coaching many times over the past number of years. As well as being a top coach he genuinely cares about each horse that he works with. He is also a remarkable rider and has often made me jealous by turning my horse inside out in 10 minutes of riding , only for him to tell me in his usual humble way " I cant do 6 weeks schooling in 6 minutes so you nearly had it yourself Glenn ". My business is producing and selling high end young horses for all markets and I show horses for my own pleasure. The part that Tom has helped us with is to establish flat work on our young horses in a simple natural way allowing our horses to develop physically and mentally with out any pressure and the jumping follows the same same simple system.  He has also helped us with our four and five year old working hunters and helped with systems and plans for each horse. And helped me to work on my own confidence before entering the ring.

Tom Walsh is a superb coach and an incredible horseman.  He has been training all our family (me, my wife, & 2  kids) for the last 4 years. Tom has an amazing and unique ability to rapidly understand what makes your horse tick and tailor his training plan to produce the desired outcome for the combination.  Over the years, he has helped us overcome many challenges, sometimes technical, often-times mental.  He is able to adapt his approach from dealing with an overly ambitious 40-something year old man (me..) one minute to dealing with an anxious teenager the next.   He has taught all of us the difference between being a passenger and taking control.  He has helped us with our flatwork (although I am yet to perfect that half-pass), our jumping and has even taken us out cross-country.  Tom’s coaching style is calm, positive, constructive and always fun.  He helps you reach that place where you trust your horse and believe in yourself.  I have never come away from a lesson with Tom not feeling stronger and more confident.  I  recommend Tom to all, young and old, regardless of ability.

Having taken up riding at a late stage it was a daunting task, like driving a car for the first time in your 40s . I got many lessons to try and improve but my biggest problem was I was sitting pretty and not really riding , everything was on chance, hope and a prayer. That all changed when I met Tom Walsh. He taught me something that none of the other coaches could manage to do , and that’s the 3 steps to success the most important basic’s , Rhythm, balance and seeing a stride. We all know this but feeling it and doing it is what makes the difference. These fundamental 3 steps to success gave me the ability to be able to ride a difficult horse with ease. My confidence, belief and improved riding were all thanks to Tom Walsh. He teaches me in a simplistic , confident way. His mindset gives you the belief you can achieve it. I was so proud winning the Open riding club rider of the year and jumping a 1.35 fence at home as a birthday surprise , it’s a day I will never forget and it’s sums Tom up , passionate , has a vested interest in you he is a confidence giver and a great fun guy to be around

Tom Walsh coaching

I’ve been training with Tom for over a year now, and trainers are indeed a bit like skin care products, what works for some people might not work for the next person, however for me, Tom seems to be a perfect match. He brings to the table the two most important qualities in a instructor, profound knowledge and a good sense of humour, both needed in horse riding. Tom has an eye for horses and read their form and movements in an instant, he often gives me instructions moments before they are needed and doesn’t miss even the smallest thing. But as well as being able to read their psychical health and attributes he also has a great sense of the horses personality and mind, and will adapt exercises and even whole jumping seasons based on that particular horses individual needs. Last but not least Tom has a great way of making me feel at ease, pushes me to progress and takes me out of my comfort zone, but stays in tune to where my head is at and builds me up as a rider and competitor. I don’t think we ever finished a session where I wasn’t buzzing and motivated afterwards.

Tom Walsh has a reputation locally of being 'the man who teaches showjumping' and it is a reputation that is well deserved as it is underlined by his success in coaching a variety of clients at all levels.

I am an amateur dressage and event rider. I competed at showjumping at 90cm for twenty years and struggled to get past the barrier even with a horse that could easily take me further. Showjumping was the bit I had to do to go cross country and while we never failed badly at it, we had far too many poles on the ground and it was mentally my weakest discipline.

Tom's skill lies in his simplistic execution of a working show jumping system. I love dressage because of the training scales that are at the foundation of it as these are what I go back to everytime I encounter or need to work through a problem. What Tom has done for me and many others is give us a foundation and system for showjumping that works and then uses that with a problem solving approach to work through issues without getting over complicated or technical.

Tom helped me go from being nervous at 90cm to easily jumping rounds of a metre at competitions and higher and wider fences in training. I recently did my first 1m/1.10m competition with his help. He is always in good form which puts everyone at ease. Most recently I trained with Tom for eventing as I needed help re-establishing the system and applying it to grass tracks. I am delighted to say I had two clear rounds showjumping in two events so far.

I've seen Tom train riders of varying levels and ability from semi professional eventers to children winning speed classes at championship levels to nervous riding club riders to competitive amateurs and in all cases he has the talent to pitch a session at the right level to help the rider and animal in question.

Tom is more than an instructor, he is a true coach. He is the person who will text you to wish you luck before an important competition, to check in to see how it went, to give a warm up fence and a word of encouragement at a show, to commiserate and to celebrate and most of all to take an interest in you and encourage you beyond the hour of training.

Tom Walsh is an incredible coach. He works on your mindset, belief and technical skills all at once. He builds trust quickly as he invests in you and your horse both with generosity of time and care. He is consistently positive no matter what obstacle or problem he is solving with you or your horse.  I have worked with Tom over the past couple of years. Initially with my veteran horse Soprano; he helped me overcome my nerves and build enough trust to start jumping again. This year, when I imported my Warmbloood horse from Germany he did an incredible job helping me to get him working consistently and also teaching him new dressage moves like Half Pass and most recently jumping him up to 120/125cm. He has done a fantastic job giving both of us the encouragement and support to progress and in a fun and enjoyable environment. I can't recommend Tom highly enough if you want to progress and enjoy your time in the saddle!
